Historical Background

The G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport, which operates as a full-time residential institution, was established in September 1980, at Angels, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica. The College campus is established on approximately forty-one (41) acres of land off the main highway leading from Spanish Town to Linstead and is approximately twenty (20) miles from Kingston, the nation’s capital.

This co-educational institution is at present the only one if its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean, and the original buildings and equipment are a gift of the Cuban Government to the people of Jamaica. Since its inception in 1980 there have been many developments and improvements not only to the physical facilities, but also to the curriculum and programmes offered at the College.

There has also been an increase in the student population, which now stands at more than ten times the number with which the College was opened in 1980. The first batch was 35 and the student population now over 700. These improvements and developments will continue as the years go by, as we seek to make the College one of which the country, and indeed the Caribbean can be proud.
